My favourite travel destination in India

Camping in Rishikesh might be the perfect vacation for some people but not me.

I  have travelled the world a bit and have seen so many different places and buildings but nothing prepares you for the view of the most famous and beautiful mausoleum in the world, a symbol of undying love- THE TAJ MAHAL.

There are two ways you can see this place. One is to stay in Agra in one of the hotels and so you can see the place in leisure and at different times of the days since the colour of taj mahal looks different in different lighting. If i remember correctly the Oberoi is the nearest hotel but please check this since i am not 100% sure. Or you can do this as a day trip from Delhi but be warned that  this is a 4 1/2 hour trip by car each way and you need to leave early in the morning to get to it and you will be tired by the end of the trip.

Since it is a world heritage centre, supposedly vehicles cant go near it so the car park is 1.5 km from the monument and then you can either walk or pay to get a electric car or a horse or camel cart to take you there. Just before you enter, there are the usual shops selling everything tacky you can think of and lots of touts selling you cards and magazines.
The best place to see the place is with a guide who is knowledgable about the place and you can arrange this throught your travel agent and we were very lucky with our guide who was excellent and can thoroughly recommend him.He cost us about 600 rupees.
The views are absolutely amazing and was even better with the narrative from the guide about subtle things about the place which i would have totally missed.
A word of warning though. Most guides will take you to a place which they have a deal with and we were told they get a commision for if the tourist buy something but i can only confirm the first bit. Our guide took us to a hand made indo-persian carpet place which was fascinating and although they say there is no hard sell, i found it hard to believe. Having said that my parents did fall the hard sell and bought a carpet.
The same thing happened at the next place when he took us to a marble shop. Best thing to do would be to be polite and decline the hard sell like we did.
Overall apart from the taj mahal, there is not a great deal to do in agra. The agra fort is nice but there is not a great deal to see in there apart from the view of taj mahal from it.
So we were glad we did it as a day trip but whatever you do DONT MISS IT on your trip to India.
